At times, you might be required to submit a Hungarian Certificate of Good Conduct (CGC), which is a police criminal record check. This certificate is sometimes also referred to as Jó magatartás tanúsítványa. Although the process of applying for your certificate might seem simple, there are some catches, such as long waiting periods, which can make it hard for individuals to apply for their certificates in person.
The Criminal Records Authority is responsible for issuing Hungarian Police Clearance Certificates. These certificates may be requested in order to establish or maintain a legal relationship and certify conditions set out in the Hungarian law. Official Certificates of Good Conduct are public documents which can be used for legal purposes.
What is a Hungarian Certificate of Good Conduct?
It is a certificate that proves the lack or existence of criminal records that appear in the registry of criminal offences in Hungary. The Hungarian Certificate of Good Conduct is issued by the Criminal Record Department, located in Budapest.
Whenever a CGC has to be used for official applications abroad it will also have to be legalised. Your destination country has to be indicated in the application form. As of February 2019, in cases where your destination country is a member of the European Union, negative certificates of criminal records and documents issued by the Civil Registries, including documents, are exempt from legalisation or apostille.
How long does it take to issue a Hungarian Certificate of Good Conduct?
It is wise to keep in mind that in certain cases, such as technical incidents, there might be a delay in the processing times of such documents. In general, however, you can expect to receive your certificate within four weeks from the date of your application.
